In this series, I explore my mother’s journey of motherhood, through her eyes The thing with idolising someone is that when they make a mistake, your reactions can be extreme - disbelief, anger, disappointment, blame. And I have done that for a long time with my mother. I’m 26 now, and slowly realising that she too was once this age. Making mistakes. Just a girl. I also sometimes think of having a child of my own and it fills me with excitement how I’d take care of them. Perhaps my mother felt these tender feelings too.
How she must have felt when I casually gave her a pretty eraser and she kept it safe for years, using it for her architectural drawings. When she put henna on my hands for a cultural school event and I didn’t like it because it was too rough around the edges, not skilled enough like the other mothers. I use the imagery of hands to explore these feelings.
